David Bowie - "Golden Years (Jeremy Sole remix)" by Jeremy Sole

To celebrate the release of David Bowie’s re-mastered Station to Station, EMI Records asked 4 KCRW DJs, Jeremy Sole, Anthony Valadez, Eric J Lawrence, and Chris Douridas, to each remixed the album’s lead single, “Golden Years”. Station to Station was recorded in Los Angeles, so it was fitting for some of KCRW’s leading tastemakers to take on the task, with each remix heard by Bowie himself. Each DJ took a unique path in recreating, deconstructing or re-imagining the classic song.

DJ Jeremy Sole flew across the country to work with Victor Axelrod, aka Ticklah, the keyboardist for Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Amy Winehouse, among others. They replayed the song in a full live setting in Brooklyn’s Dunham Studios — along with members of Budos Band, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, and Menahan Street Band — recording 100% analog to 2” tape to get a vintage feel.

"My plan was to not remix, but re-play the song in a full live setting, as if in 1975 Bowie recorded the original and then flew to Brooklyn (or even Jamaica) to cut another take with “my” players. Everything was recorded 100% analog to 2” tape. All equipment that was available before 1975. My approach was to take influence of the Jamaican musicians (and recording styles) of the mid-seventies, and their infatuation with American Soul music. If you dig it, that would be great. Knowing that BOWIE digs it, I’m over the moon."

Thanks to all who came out last weekend for JEREMY SOLE'S MUSAICS live @ Levitt Pavilion LA!
'Twas a beautiful night with fam and friends picnicing and dancing under the stars. We had a 90 minute set so we really stretched out and kept it open and free. We did the Afro, Latin and Disco-Skalypso tunes, but also slowed it down with a new solo acoustic tune of mine, and a dubby space improv w/ my new electric mbira and the horn section.

Truly appreciate yall making it out and adding to the love in the park that night. Mean it. No other full band gigs for the summer. Working on the album and waiting for juuust the right moment to pull the guys together for another live affair. They're all on tour for the rest of the summer/fall, with ORGONE, FITZ & THE TANTRUMS, DENGUE FEVER and their other outrageous outfits.

re-cap of Wednesday; It was the day before his set at the competition and although he stays calm and focused, I could tell Will (Quantic) had a lot on his mind. He stayed home to rest after a full day of press, meetings and band rehearsal.

I had to leave Cali much earlier than I would have liked, so with a little help from my friend Sabo, my last day felt like a whole weekend squeezed into 24 hours. Hitting one last record spot, going to the opening night of Petronio Alvarez (!), start drinking Viche, afterparty at Mikasa, even more Viche, and an after-afterparty on a beautiful penthouse overlooking the entire valley. Taxi to the hotel, grabbed the bags and hit the airport.

By the time I landed at LAX, Quantic & his Combo Bárbaro would be getting ready to compete at Petronio - which takes place in a huge bullfighting ring. The stands would be packed and the spirit of Colombia would be raging through the arena. Mochilla (B+ and Coleman) documented the final day. As a musician and producer, Sole uses the word "MUSAICS" as both a band name and a conceptual approach; sampling world beats from old records, writing original music for a 9-piece ensemble, and juxtaposing it all as a form of mosaic music.

Sole has pulled together his dream team of musicians including members of The Lions, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Antibalas, Orgone, Mayer Hawthorne, Build an Ark and many more projects. Alan Lightner on percussion and steel drums, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on Viola, Todd Simon on trumpet and a heavyweight cast of players who invoke the spirits and spark the dancefloor. With Sole on MPC sampler, turntables and guitar, MUSAICS keeps an experimental-yet-steady groove that hybridizes elements of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Spiritual Jazz, Brazilian rhythms and dubbed-out dancefloor beats.

MUSAICS' debut gig was at the Getty Museum with the Budos Band, almost a year later they headlined a KCRW event for over 3000 people. It is a collective of some of LA's most in-demand studio and touring musicians, so when they find the rare moments to come together as MUSAICS, rare and beautiful things happen.

Day one in Cali, Colombia con my man Will 'Quantic', his lovely wife Ariana and the Combo. Just a quick note to pass along a few photos of the beautiful hotel (saboriarte.com) and Will's place.

El Combo Barbaro had their first rehearsal last night. Thursday at 9pm their perform, or COMPETE rather, in the annual Petronio Alvarez colombian music competition. There's a category for more tradition folkloric styles, a few other regional sections, and then the "other" category, which Quantic & His Combo Barbaro are entering, along with some local favorites like ChocQuibTown.

I'll write back again, but tomorrow the festival starts, so after soundcheck and a few empty bottles of viche (a Colombian favorite not unlike Aguardiente), anything can happen. I miss my woman so I can keep eyeballs in my head, but for the record it's true what they say; "Las caleñas Son Como Las Flores" (¡!)

Need this DVD in my life. Now.

[ROOTS] For the past 20 years, Chicago-born Jeremy Sole has been making beats since the MPC 60 was born, deejaying since rotary crossfaders were the standard, and playing clubs since he was too young to (legally) get in. As a teenager, Sole's underground loft parties were packed with sweaty bodies - a culture clash at the birth of Hip Hop and House music. He matured as a turntablist in Jazz, Dub and experimental hybrid bands before the phrase "Acid Jazz" confined that sound. The rich Chicago history of Blues, Jazz, Disco and Funk were all part of his upbringing, and like a true music lover Jeremy has always reveled in the place where they all blend together. “When I was young, I spent many a night in the alleys behind blues clubs, listening to cats like Buddy Guy through the air vents. Those same nights I would be mixing with legendary Disco deejays at our downtown loft parties." Since then his obsession grew to include music from around every corner of the world.

[RESIDENCIES] As Co-Founder and resident deejay of AFRO FUNKÉ, Sole and his partners produce the event that, over the past 7 years, continues to bring a diverse mix of loyal fans together each week at the Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Blending Afrobeat, Funk, Reggae, Latin, Brazilian and Deep House rhythms; Afro Funké has hosted hundreds of international guest performers over the past 5 years, from Rich Medina and DJ Spinna to impromptu jam sessions with Zap Mama and Stevie Wonder playing over Sole's DJ sets. Every week is a future memory. Sole, along with Cut Chemist, is also a monthly resident at FUNKY SOLE, LA's longest-running rare Funk night thrown by Music Man Miles of Breakestra fame. Wow, it's been a solid MONTH since I posted anything. Trying to keep this sucker updated, but been locking myself in the studio (between gigs) to finish these few remixes I've got in the oven. Feeling good so far. One remix I did for Tru Thoughts artist Natural Self, and another that I did on spec for Quantic (cross fingers that the label picks it) - made a dub tune out of his original, and featured the thick string arrangements of Brasilian legend Arthur Verocai (click HERE to watch his recent performance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic!). It's was an honor to work with all the parts of his for this. I'll have some to share soon, probably on my SoundCloud page.

Nu-Mark began DJing as a teenager in Los Angeles. Over the course of the last two decades, he has amassed a collection of over 35,000 records and refined his technical skills and performance style to the point where he is widely recognized as one of the key figures in the late-90s DJ explosion which pushed the DJ to the front of the culture’s awareness. As a result of this distinction, Nu-Mark has been featured in a diversity of publications and in several films: the critically acclaimed documentary “Scratch,” “KeepinTime” (which features impromptu collaborations with Mad Lib, Cut-Chemist, Babu, J-Rocc, and drummers James Gatson and Paul Humphrey), “Coachella: The Movie,” and “Rock the Bells – The Documentary.”
Recognized for his membership in the gold selling group Jurassic 5, Nu-Mark is best known for his production on the raw anthem “What’s Golden” and the smooth and soulful “Work It Out,” featuring Dave Matthews. My friends, sad news. Another siren has crossed over. On January 1st, 37-year-old Lhasa De Sela died of breast cancer. Lhasa grew up in a nomadic family, living out of their school bus and often working with the circus. Her french, spanish and english songs all hold such a profound depth. She was always a favorite of mine, and even replied to my email last year when I begged her to release more music. In Montreal, Canada: Sunday January 3rd, 2010

The singer Lhasa de Sela passed away in her Montreal home on the night of January 1st 2010, just before midnight.

She succumbed to breast cancer after a twenty-one month long struggle, which she faced with courage and determination.

Throughout this difficult period, she continued to touch the lives of those around her with her characteristic grace, beauty and humor. The strength of her will carried her once again into the recording studio, where she completed her latest album, followed by successful record launches in Montreal at the Théatre Corona and in Paris at the Théatre des Bouffes du Nord. Two concerts in Iceland in May were to be her last.

She was forced to cancel a long international tour scheduled for autumn 2009. A projected album of the songs of Victor Jara and Violeta Parra would also remain unrealized.

Lhasa de Sela was born on September 27, 1972, in Big Indian, New York.

Lhasa's unusual childhood was marked by long periods of nomadic wandering through Mexico and the U.S., with her parents and sisters in the school bus which was their home. During this period the children improvised, both theatrically and musically, performing for their parents on a nightly basis. Lhasa grew up in a world imbued with artistic discovery, far from conventional culture.

Later Lhasa became the exceptional artist that the entire world discovered in 1997 with La Llorona, followed by 2003's The Living Road, and 2009's self-titled LHASA. These three albums have sold over a million copies world-wide.

It is difficult to describe her unique voice and stage presence, which earned her iconic status in many countries throughout the world, but some Journalists have described it as passionate, sensual, untameable, tender, profound, troubling, enchanting, hypnotic, hushed, powerful, intense, a voice for all time.

Lhasa had a unique way of communicating with her public. She dared to open her heart on stage, allowing her audience to experience an intimate connection and communion with her. She profoundly affected and inspired many people throughout the cities and countries she visited.

An old friend of Lhasa's, Jules Beckman, offered these words:

"We have always heard something ancestral coming through her. She has always spoken from the threshold between the worlds, outside of time. She has always sung of human tragedy and triumph, estrangement and seeking with a Witness's wisdom. She has placed her life at the feet of the Unseen."

Lhasa leaves behind her partner Ryan, her parents Alejandro and Alexandra, her step-mother Marybeth, her 9 brothers and sisters (Gabriela, Samantha, Ayin, Sky, Miriam, Alex, Ben, Mischa and Eden), her 16 nieces and nephews, her cat Isaan, and countless friends, musicians, and colleagues who have accompanied her throughout her career, not to mention her innumerable admirers throughout the world.

Her family and close friends were able to mourn peacefully during the last two days, and greatly appreciated this meaningful period of quiet intimacy. Funeral and services will be held privately.

It has snowed more than 40 hours in Montreal since Lhasa's departure.

From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in the Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects.

Along with DJ Romes and Wild Child, Madlib formed the Lootpack in their hometown of Oxnard. The trio made their debut on tha Alkaholiks' 21 and Over in 1993. They continued doing work for tha Alkaholiks and other artists before releasing their full-length Soundpieces: Da Antidote six years later. The album earned solid reviews but went largely unnoticed. Madlib did not, however. After hooking up with Los Angeles DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib did a lot of production for Wolf's Stones Throw label. In 1999 the label released Quasimoto's astonishing The Unseen LP. Doubling as himself and his alter ego Quasimoto, Madlib handled vocals and production duties on the album, a huge critical success. Not resting on his laurels, Madlib followed The Unseen a year later with his Yesterday's New Quintet project. Madlib played all the instruments himself, infusing his exploration of jazz with both style and substance.

While continuing on with a massive release schedule and work load, Madlib completed a remix/reinterpretation project for Blue Note, a collaboration with Jay Dee under the Jaylib alias, a collaboration with MF Doom, produced 1/2 of fellow Lootpack member Wildchild's solo record and many other remix and producer tasks all in 2003. In 2007, Madlib produced 8 songs on Erykah Badu's latest album New Amerykah: Part One CD/LP (2008), and has collaborated w/ some of Hip Hop's most respected, Mos Def & Talib Kweli. With each year Madlib has continued to expand his abilities beyond the core hip hop that he is known for.

Much love to all who completely sold out The Roxy Theatre on 11/20/09. It was an epic night to say the least, and I was honored to host and deejay the affair. 15 minutes after the doors opened, the spot was packed and grooving to my opening set. The Lions went on shortly after, and did what could have just as well been a showstopping headlining set. Then my man Todd Simon came up to the deejay booth to play trumpet over my set with me. I mixed for over an hour, dubbing out Todd's horn, heavy-like. I never went faster than 90 BPM the whole time, slow and steady, keeping the capacity crowd churning like syrup.

By the time I was about to introduce New Zealand's Fat Freddy's Drop, the place erupted in a thick cloud of cheer and smoke, and the ritual was underway. FFD exceeded every expectation in the room, and left a future memory on us all.

...All this after losing their WHOLE TRAILER OF GEAR on the road down from San Francisco, only to backtrack a few miles to find that it had rolled off the side of a hill and shredded like tin foil on the intersection below. Every instrument case was demolished, but miraculously, the only instrument that was destroyed was the baritone sax. An expensive piece of gear, but they were grateful the rest was fine. They spent alot replacing all the cases, rented a few things, and made it to The Roxy in time to blow our little minds!

On Saturday September 12th 2009, KCRW hosted the SUMMER NIGHTS event at the Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC) in Costa Mesa. KCRW's Music Director JASON BENTLEY and I deejayed, and my MUSAICS project performed our 2nd live performance since our debut at the Getty Museum in 2008 (opening for the almighty Budos Band!). Needless to say that Getty performance was a biggie for us - but this past Saturday will be just as deep a future memory for me.

About 3,000 folks came out, under the late summer sky, to do nothing more than get together, dance, and enjoy good music in support of KCRW. I've received so much warm feedback about KCRW and it's impact on people's days, but it was something else to feeeel it - this communal, immediate exchange of energy and appreciation spiraling into a vortex and building up until the last song was mixed.

I started the evening off at 9pm, and there were already a few hundreds folks hanging out for, what I thought would be a laid back evening of tunes while folks stand around "being there". Like a picnic, standing up. Instead it didn't take 10 minutes to realize that they were there to get INTO the music. My 45 minute set went all over, from Reggae beats to Latin remixes, slowly building in intensity toward an uptempo push. Forget any slander you hear about the OC being devoid of culture - plenty come out, plenty get it, and plenty get down.

MUCH LOVE to ALL who came out to make this such a special night. OCPAC; thanks sincerely for having us in your beautiful space. Thanks to all KCRW DJs who played my remixes and/or live Musaics recordings on your show to help promote the night. JASON BENTLEY; big thanks for bringing me in on this event when you have a full stable of amazing cats at the station to choose from. You're ability to highlight each person's talents in different ways, is the cornerstone of your catapulting success. RACHEL REYNOLDS, ARIANA MORGENSTERN and especially LIZ McDONALD; you made a big thing happen here, be proud. Be very proud.

Just got back from Burning Man, mixing 5 sets in 2 days. Nickodemus and I went out together to make some noise and soak up the freedom and heat for a few days. Big thanks to The Do Lab for having me play your outrageous soundsystem, as well as FunkCamp (Fandango), PEX (Philadelphia Experiment) Stage, and especially Nickodemus - for having me crash his set and mix w/ him on Robot Heart, the huge double-decker "bus" art car soundsystem. Robot Heart departed the Playa at 1am as we mixed into the full-mooned desert night. People followed by bike and on foot, and when we parked Nicko and I tag-teamed the whole set. Folks lost their minds, dancing all around the bus for hours. This was the overall theme of the whole trip... that good kind of madness!

Honored that friends Marques Wyatt, Osunlade and Nickodemus came to dance to my sets. Got to make some freaky noise w/ my man BC, too. All good folks, everywhere, that's for sure.

On friday, August 21st I deejayed an evening with Martin Luther, who has been co-performing with Cody Chesnutt - where Cody can work out some new tunes for his forthcoming album. I mixed many of Cody's first LA shows, and he has "it". You know... "it"; the Spirit. It didn't take long for the world to feel it too, and after lending and re-making his tune "The Seed" with The Roots, he was set to shoot to the top. Instead, Cody left the insincerity of Hollywood to keep his message pure from infection.

It was great to hear him and Martin Luther again that night, after so long. Both are top-notch singers, writers and showmen - folks with that kind of Soul that makes the audience completely disregard whether it's "their" kind of music or not. It penetrates your heart and makes your blood pump on beat. Here's a video of Cody singing in the crowd that evening...

KCRW's 8th AnnualReggae Night at The Hollywood Bowl.

On Sunday, August 9th I had the distinct honor of hosting an amazing night of music, featuring TOOTS & THE MAYTALS and MICHAEL ROSE at the legendary Hollywood Bowl...As they led me to my room backstage, I noticed the black and white photos that line the hallway - Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix and other legends that have graced the stage of the historic Hollywood Bowl. The depth of the moment began to set in. Now, I have seen a lot of green rooms, introduced and deejayed for many of my living idols - and your better believe hosting a night with Black Uhuru's Michael Rose and the one and only Toots & The Maytals would definitely be one of them. But what was unprecedented in my world was hosting a sold out show of 18,000 people, under a perfect August sky in Los Angeles. The energy was electric, and the honor I felt was majestic.

If you had asked me when I moved to LA, if I could picture myself on the stage of the Hollywood Bowl, I'm not going to lie - the answer would be yes. Yet still, when the moment came and I was cued to take the mic, all the warmth flooded inward; the joy of sharing music for a living, the inspiring family that I have inherited at KCRW, and the present moment of personal grandeur all compounded on inhalation. And let me tell you the exhale was even sweeter. I stepped to the mic and did what I do, and the rest of the night, as they say, is history - at least personally.

Got some friends together to go see this film last night. It was OUTRAGEOUS. By far, the freshest music documentary and concert footage I have seen. The story of the legendary concert supporting the "Rumble In The Jungle" (Ali vs Foreman in Zaire, Africa '74). James Brown, Bill Withers, The Spinners, B.B.King, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Fania All Stars!? Hector Lavoe working out harmonies w/ Celia Cruz. Bill Withers, Don King and Ali talking over breakfast. Manu Dibango walking down the street playing his horn while the kids all sing along. Amazing Highlife band performing on a street corner and so much more ...Zaire '74!

[gig review: Thu.7/2/09] Since I've been playing his music for the Afro Funke' crowd for years, it was great to have Nick at AF to celebrate his "Sun People" release. Folks truly came out en masse and the spirit was strong, as you can see in this video made by LA2DAY.COM, who covered the event for press. Glenn and I got down on the tables, with our guest of honor of course, and the surprise Batucada drum troupe strolled onto the dancefloor to bring about the climax of the night. [gig review: Sat.6/6/09] What a special treat, when the Fowler Museum asked us to recreate the AF affair under their roof. I mixed in the middle courtyard around the fountain, while people filed in. I welcomed everyone, and invited them into one of the gallery rooms where BALANDUGU KAN began their African drumming and dancing, surrounded by the larger-than-life art installations by Nigerian artist EL ANATSUI and others. They moved the crowd back into the center courtyard where ROCKY DAWUNI did a mostly-acoustic set of tunes that had everyone singing along until the end.

[gig review: Thu.6/14/09] Another live one right here. OHMEGA WATTS makes some fresh music, and is also a great DJ. The family packed into the room, and we took a quick 4-hour trip around the world. 9-10pm was the listening party and giveaways for the new ZAP MAMA album "ReCreation", so fresh. I'm feeling the tunes "Vibrations" and "African Diamond", featuring legendary Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, focusing on the the horrible 'blood diamond' situation throughout Africa.
