A Triple Gigger. (Fri.5/22/09)
Union Rally, Santa Monica Youth Center & Venice Bungalow jam.

(1 of 3):
VERY BE CAREFUL & I perform SEIU UNION Rally
Yep, 3 gigs this day - starting at 10am with the SERVICE EMPLOYMENT INTERNATIONAL UNION Rally against the recent cuts in home care wages. DJ B-NASTY was mixing when I got there at 9:30 - all of Spring street shut down like a huge concert in the street. By the time VERY BE CAREFUL started playing, the march of 5,000 people turned the corner, ending up at the stage. VBC added to the people power bouncing between corporate buildings on both sides of us all, and when they finished I mixed until I got the cue to get on the mic...

"People, you've been taking care of Los Angeles for years -
and now it's time for Los Angeles to care of you."

Maaan let me tell you the crowd erupted and the public speakers drove home the much needed appreciation for their lives of service. Helicopters, Photographers and News reporters were everywhere - I believe their unified voice was heard.

(2 of 3): UNITY PROJECT YOUTH CENTER
Gig #2 was a youth empowerment event with performances by ALOE BLACC, J BRAVE from Luminaries, JOSHUA SILVERSTEIN and myself. Some group exercises and poems. ANTHONY VALADEZ showed everyone how to scratch and let 'em try it. A great few hours ended with an open cypher on the mic while Joshua beatboxed and I looped some basslines. All this put together as a labor of love by Sheera, Te'amir and friends.

(3 of 3): RALLICKE'S BIRTHDAY
The 3rd gig of the day capped off the 18-hour marathon. Every time Glenn and I mix Dave Rallicke's Venice house parties, it's always some all-night madness. Rallicke is the multi-instrumentalist from CULVER CITY DUB COLLECTIVE and DENGUE FEVER - great player and super-fun human. Like every time, so many musicians came out that we ended up playing backing grooves (Salsa, Samba, Funk and second-line New Orleans boogie) for the sax, tuba, trumpet, piano and vocalists to burn. The crowd bouncing off the sweaty walls. When I came home from mixing his previous party, my loft was on fire - surrounded by 4 fire trucks and a gang of fireman. This time, albeit sunrise, it ended smoothly.
