Blessssyall...

Thanks to all who came out last weekend for JEREMY SOLE'S MUSAICS live @ Levitt Pavilion LA!
'Twas a beautiful night with fam and friends picnicing and dancing under the stars. We had a 90 minute set so we really stretched out and kept it open and free. We did the Afro, Latin and Disco-Skalypso tunes, but also slowed it down with a new solo acoustic tune of mine, and a dubby space improv w/ my new electric mbira and the horn section.

Truly appreciate yall making it out and adding to the love in the park that night. Mean it. No other full band gigs for the summer. Working on the album and waiting for juuust the right moment to pull the guys together for another live affair. They're all on tour for the rest of the summer/fall, with ORGONE, FITZ & THE TANTRUMS, DENGUE FEVER and their other outrageous outfits.

This Friday on Abbot Kinney (Venice)

Give The Drummer Some

Legendary drummer Clyde Stubblefield is in

dire need of a kidney transplant.

Can you donate to help him?

In July 2009, funk drumming legend, Clyde Stubblefield, whose sampled beats from his innovative recordings with James Brown have shaped the sound of hip-hop and drum & bass music, suffered kidney failure and began weekly dialysis treatment.

In July 2010, The Coalition for Clyde Stubblefield - an artist & industry association of Clyde's supporters - was founded by drummers Stanton Moore, Johnny Rabb and David Stanoch to spread word of Clyde's situation and new avenues being created expressly for donating financial support directly to him.

Clyde continues to work and perform regularly while dealing with the stress his kidney dialysis treatments demand.

Remember, no contribution is too small and every penny makes a difference. JOIN THE COALITION & SPREAD THE WORD! Follow the simple instructions under the widget for embedding it into your own websites & social media pages! We thank you for your concern and generosity.

*OUT NOW: NATURAL SELF
"My Hearts Beats: Remixes and Versions"

On August 17th, Tru Thoughts records released a new EP by UK producer, deejay and vocalist NATURAL SELF called "MY HEART BEATS: Remixes and Versions". The release is a follow-up to his "My Heart Beats Like a Drum" album, and includes two remixes by yours truly, featuring the beautiful vocals of ELODIE RAMA. I flipped the sultry original "Midnight  Sun" head-nodder, into a more bluesy stomp, with dubbed-out horns and scatting vocals. My second version is the same song without drums, for a more etheric feel.

OUT NOW. Click to listen/buy @ iTunes, Boomkat and all digital outlets!

TRACKLIST:
1. Midnight Sun (Prince Fatty Version)
2. Midnight Sun (Prince Fatty Dub)
3. Street Spirit
4. Al Static (Natural Self Remix)
5. Midnight Sun (Jeremy Sole’s Sans Drums Remix)
6. Midnight Sun (Jeremy Sole’s Moonstomp Remix)
7. The Origin (Kidkanevil Remix)
8. The Origin (Eliphino Mix)
9. The Shock You Heard (YULT’s Sub Remix)

Colombia: ¡first day of Petronio Alvarez!

re-cap of Wednesday; It was the day before his set at the competition and although he stays calm and focused, I could tell Will (Quantic) had a lot on his mind. He stayed home to rest after a full day of press, meetings and band rehearsal.
I had to leave Cali much earlier than I would have liked, so with a little help from my friend Sabo, my last day felt like a whole weekend squeezed into 24 hours. Hitting one last record spot, going to the opening night of Petronio Alvarez (!), start drinking Viche, afterparty at Mikasa, even more Viche, and an after-afterparty on a beautiful penthouse overlooking the entire valley. Taxi to the hotel, grabbed the bags and hit the airport.
By the time I landed at LAX, Quantic & his Combo Bárbaro would be getting ready to compete at Petronio - which takes place in a huge bullfighting ring. The stands would be packed and the spirit of Colombia would be raging through the arena. Mochilla (B+ and Coleman) documented the final day. Stay tuned to KCRW.com for the full audio/photo essay of QUANTIC AT PETRONIO ALVAREZ 2010.

Musaics at Levitt Pavilion LA

Since the Levitt Pavilion opened in 2007, over 85,000 have gathered in MacArthur Park to picnic on the grassy lawn and enjoy music under the stars. The open lawn forms a natural amphitheater with an inviting and relaxed atmosphere. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, picnic dinners, family and friends. We invite you to come and experience the magic this summer as music plays in MacArthur Park! THE EVENT IS FREE & OPEN TO ALL AGES.

Sunday, August 15th 7-9pm

Levitt Pavilion presents
an evening with JEREMY SOLE'S MUSAICS

personnel:

JEREMY SOLE - Turntables/Guitar/Production
TODD SIMON - Trumpet, Flugelhorn
DAVID RALICKE - Baritone Sax/Trombone
TRACY WANNOMAE - Sax/Baritone Clarinet
ALAN LIGHTNER - Perc/Steel Drums
DAMON AARON - Guitar
JOEY REINA - Bass

As a musician and producer, Sole uses the word "MUSAICS" as both a band name and a conceptual approach; sampling world beats from old records, writing original music for a 9-piece ensemble, and juxtaposing it all as a form of mosaic music.

Sole has pulled together his dream team of musicians including members of The Lions, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Antibalas, Orgone, Mayer Hawthorne, Build an Ark and many more projects. Alan Lightner on percussion and steel drums, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on Viola, Todd Simon on trumpet and a heavyweight cast of players who invoke the spirits and spark the dancefloor. With Sole on MPC sampler, turntables and guitar, MUSAICS keeps an experimental-yet-steady groove that hybridizes elements of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Spiritual Jazz, Brazilian rhythms and dubbed-out dancefloor beats.

MUSAICS' debut gig was at the Getty Museum with the Budos Band, almost a year later they headlined a KCRW event for over 3000 people. It is a collective of some of LA's most in-demand studio and touring musicians, so when they find the rare moments to come together as MUSAICS, rare and beautiful things happen.

Musaics @ The Mint 2009:

Notes from Colombia: Quantic @ Petronio (day 1)

Day one in Cali, Colombia con my man Will 'Quantic', his lovely wife Ariana and the Combo. Just a quick note to pass along a few photos of the beautiful hotel (saboriarte.com) and Will's place.

El Combo Barbaro had their first rehearsal last night. Thursday at 9pm their perform, or COMPETE rather, in the annual Petronio Alvarez colombian music competition. There's a category for more tradition folkloric styles, a few other regional sections, and then the "other" category, which Quantic & His Combo Barbaro are entering, along with some local favorites like ChocQuibTown.

I'll write back again, but tomorrow the festival starts, so after soundcheck and a few empty bottles of viche (a Colombian favorite not unlike Aguardiente), anything can happen. I miss my woman so I can keep eyeballs in my head, but for the record it's true what they say; "Las caleñas Son Como Las Flores" (¡!)

Blisters on my fingers...

Dig it; I went to the Celebrate Brooklyn festival last weekend... Guess who bought the one-and-only electric bass Mbira (Kalimba) from KONONO No1?! It has a separate 1/2" input for the normal register, and another for the bass keys! Just had to share:

SOUNDS&VISIONS ft. Musaics, Breakestra, Blackalicious, Nu-Mark...

**heavy one** ...EARLY EVENT: Doors @ 8pm, we hit @ 10pm exactly. Pre-sale tix HERE.

Le Mejor y Sabor de QUANTIC.

just finished a mixtape for Tru Thoughts that I spent a while making, and am real proud of... "Lo Mejor y Sabor de QUANTIC: A Retrospective of Will Holland" (translates loosely into "The Best and Flavor of QUANTIC"). It's a free download exclusively on XLR8R.com for this week. The mix contains my faves as well as completely unheard songs by Quantic, like "Cumbia de Dilla" (w/ Will on accordion) and rare outtakes of live performances, interviews, remixes and film audio.

a little bit about theLIFT residents:
*** JEREMY SOLE ***
[ROOTS] For the past 20 years, Chicago-born Jeremy Sole has been making beats since the MPC 60 was born, deejaying since rotary crossfaders were the standard, and playing clubs since he was too young to (legally) get in. As a teenager, Sole's underground loft parties were packed with sweaty bodies - a culture clash at the birth of Hip Hop and House music. He matured as a turntablist in Jazz, Dub and experimental hybrid bands before the phrase "Acid Jazz" confined that sound. The rich Chicago history of Blues, Jazz, Disco and Funk were all part of his upbringing, and like a true music lover Jeremy has always reveled in the place where they all blend together. “When I was young, I spent many a night in the alleys behind blues clubs, listening to cats like Buddy Guy through the air vents. Those same nights I would be mixing with legendary Disco deejays at our downtown loft parties." Since then his obsession grew to include music from around every corner of the world.

[RESIDENCIES] As Co-Founder and resident deejay of AFRO FUNKÉ, Sole and his partners produce the event that, over the past 7 years, continues to bring a diverse mix of loyal fans together each week at the Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Blending Afrobeat, Funk, Reggae, Latin, Brazilian and Deep House rhythms; Afro Funké has hosted hundreds of international guest performers over the past 5 years, from Rich Medina and DJ Spinna to impromptu jam sessions with Zap Mama and Stevie Wonder playing over Sole's DJ sets. Every week is a future memory. Sole, along with Cut Chemist, is also a monthly resident at FUNKY SOLE, LA's longest-running rare Funk night thrown by Music Man Miles of Breakestra fame. Venturing deeper with his friend DJ Wiseacre, Sole has recently gone back to his roots, throwing "theLIFT" - monthly, all-night, RSVP-only loft parties at random locations throughout Los Angeles.

[ROSTER] Jeremy has had the honor of sharing the stage and/or the studio with hundreds of his deepest inspirations, including Sly Stone, Roy Ayers, Ben Harper, Tony Allen, DJ Krush, Stevie Wonder, War, The Meters, Chaka Khan, Seu Jorge, The Greyboy Allstars, Antibalas, Fat Freddy's Drop, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Joe Bataan, Quantic and many more. He was the last DJ to open for Ray Charles, and had the distinct honor of mixing at the California Democratic Party's Election Night Celebration at the exact moment when Barack Obama officially became our 44th President. Over 20,000 people were in attendance.

[RADIO] In April 2006, Sole spent months making music with Lauryn Hill. The first words she said after hearing him DJ was "Have you ever thought about getting into radio? because THIS is the music that the people need to hear". Exactly one year later Anne Litt from KCRW called, asking him that exact same question, and now 3 years later you can still catch Sole on 89.9 KCRW (or worldwide at kcrw.com), Wednesdays, midnight-3am. You can also dig the archived shows at http://www.kcrw.com/jeremysole

[MUSAICS] As a musician and producer, Sole uses the word "Musaics" as both an artist alias and a conceptual approach; sampling seemingly unrelated world rhythms and melodies from old records, writing original music utilizing his 9-piece ensemble, and juxtaposing it all as a form of mosaic music. Sole has pulled together his dream team of musicians including members of The Lions, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Antibalas, Mayer Hawthorne, Build an Ark and many more projects. With Jeremy on MPC, turntables and guitar, they keep an experimental-yet-steady groove that hybridizes elements of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Spiritual Jazz and dubbed-out dancefloor beats. In his own personal productions, Sole has done remixes for Afrobeat heir FEMI KUTI as well as NATURAL SELF, QUANTIC, ZAP MAMA, Latin Funk group BROWNOUT and Ghanaian Reggae artist ROCKY DAWUNI.

*** WISEACRE ***
born into the lovely environs of suburban lands lying to the east of los angeles, and raised on frozen food, meat and the religious right, eric tucker, aka wiseacre, currently finds himself happily free yet equally inspired by it all. living in the seaside republic of venice for 19 years, wiseacre initially established a successful career as a commercial/fine art photgrapher. in 2003, he decided to pick up some vinyl, a couple of turntables, a mixer, two speakers and a few friends in order to begin the labor of love we call “throwin’ parties”. since this time, wiseacre has put his love for photography on hold and co-created three very successful LA parties, FUNKY IN THE MIDDLE, CUSTOM SUNDAZE and now an underground affair theLIFT. he has hosted and played along side such talents as NICKODEMUS, LOUIE VEGA, OSUNLADE, MARK FARINA, ZEB, NAPPY G, MR. SCRUFF, QUANTIC, MARQUES WYATT, KING BRITT, MAD MATS, SIMBAD, FORT KNOX FIVE, DOMU, KARIZMA, J BOOGIE, IAN FRIDAY, RECLOOSE, MAKOSSA + MEGABLAST, MARK RAE, FEDERICO AUBELE, DJ DAY, SABO, THE PIMPS OF JOYTIME, DJ VADIM, MARK DE CLIVE LOWE, VIKTER DUPLAIX, 7 SAMURAI, SCOTT K, EDUARDO CASTILLO, RAUL CAMPOS, ED ROYAL, CULVER CITY DUB COLLECTIVE, SAKE ONE, DAZ-I-KUE, AFROKINETIC, DJ DRM, MUSIC MAN MILES, GARTH TRINIDAD, TAL M KLEIN, YOSAKU, INKA ONE and the one and only JEREMY SOLE. currently, wiseacre is designing and building a restaurant/club in NYC where he will be able to continue his quest to bridge genres of music and people and build a scene that is not exclusive or segmented, but rather one that simply appreciates “good music”. the tunes wiseacre chooses to share is deep and wide…. from brooklyn to the balkans, from south america to sweden, from house, to disco, to afro-latin broken beat and dub… in short, wiseacre loves good music, his lovely wife-to-be rae and daughter zoe.

¡MONF!

Wow, it's been a solid MONTH since I posted anything. Trying to keep this sucker updated, but been locking myself in the studio (between gigs) to finish these few remixes I've got in the oven. Feeling good so far. One remix I did for Tru Thoughts artist Natural Self, and another that I did on spec for Quantic (cross fingers that the label picks it) - made a dub tune out of his original, and featured the thick string arrangements of Brasilian legend Arthur Verocai (click HERE to watch his recent performance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic!). It's was an honor to work with all the parts of his for this. I'll have some to share soon, probably on my SoundCloud page.
